Peggy Berry - Spark Award

Peggy Parker Berry, a trailblazer in nonprofit development dedicated to enhancing our region's quality of life. With a career marked by transformative achievements, Peggy has consistently advanced fundraising and community well-being.

Starting at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, Peggy's passion for philanthropy was ignited. She founded the development office at Stewart Regional Blood Center and served as the inaugural development director for the East Texas Food Bank.

Peggy's leadership was pivotal when she became the first President of AFP East Texas, overseeing its growth into the largest startup chapter in AFP history. Today, as the founder and president of Peggy Berry Consulting, she continues to empower nonprofits with tailored fundraising solutions.

Beyond her professional life, Peggy is a charter member of the Women's Fund of Smith County and an active member of Marvin Methodist Church, where her impactful work is celebrated.

Peggy's visionary leadership with the 2023 Spark Award—a well-deserved tribute to her profound impact on our community's growth and prosperity. The AFP East Texas community owes a deep debt of gratitude to Peggy Berry for her visionary leadership, which has resulted in a vibrant chapter committed to donor-centric, ethical fundraising practices. As AFP East Texas celebrates its 15th anniversary, it is a great honor to present the 2023 Spark Award to our esteemed colleague and friend, Peggy Berry.


Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation - Hibbs Family Foundation

We proudly present the Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation award to the Hibbs Family Foundation, a name synonymous with both business success and commitment to philanthropy.

For over 50 years, the Hibbs family has not only been known for their business acumen but also for their extraordinary generosity and dedication to our community. At the heart of this legacy is Billy Hibbs, Jr., who approaches philanthropy with a deep faith-inspired desire to mirror God's love for others.

Billy's leadership as Chair of the Tyler Junior College Foundation saw the endowment assets exceed $100 million, with an astounding 94% dedicated to student scholarships, enabling many to access quality education.

Established in 2000, the Hibbs Family Foundation, led by Billy, his wife Tisa, and their children Stratton and London, has made a profound impact locally and globally, supporting diverse nonprofit organizations.

Special Achievement - Jennifer Carson

Jennifer Carson, the founder of The Children's Park of Tyler, is a compassionate visionary dedicated to supporting and uplifting her community. After experiencing a profound loss, Jennifer was called to create a safe haven for grieving families.

Through her leadership, The Children's Park has become a sanctuary, offering solace and support. Jennifer also led a support group for parents who have lost a child, providing guidance and compassion during their difficult journeys.

Jennifer's unique ability to create spaces for individual healing and growth sets her apart. She listens not just to words but to the hearts in pain, recognizing that grief is a multifaceted experience.

Jennifer holds degrees in various fields, including health and wellness, and is a Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, reflecting her commitment to holistic well-being.

Even in retirement, Jennifer's legacy continues to bear fruit, sowing the seeds of compassion that will thrive for years to come. We celebrate her remarkable achievements and lasting impact on our community. 

Outstanding Philanthropist - Fred Smith

Fred Smith, our Outstanding Philanthropist, embodies the true spirit of giving and altruism. Philanthropy, by definition, seeks to enhance the welfare of others, and Fred exemplifies this in every way.

His selfless contributions extend to numerous nonprofits, churches, civic groups, and individuals, both locally and globally. Fred doesn't just give; he actively guides and empowers those working to make the world a better place.

Fred's impact goes beyond generosity. He's a catalyst for positive change, founding organizations like the Fourth Partner Foundation, East Texas Communities Foundation, and the Women's Fund of Smith County. He's also behind The Gathering, a national organization making a profound difference.
